.V.A.R.I.A.T.I.O. XVI  “The Wings of Intelligent Whirlwind” is dedicated to the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, who continuously inspires my works with his music.

The title comes from a Baudelaire’s poem quoted by Glenn Gould himself while talking about the Goldberg Variations.

Today space is magnificent!
Without bridle or bit or spurs
Let us ride away on wine
To a divine, fairy-like heaven!

Like two angels who are tortured
By a relentless delirium,
Let us follow the far mirage
Through the crystal blue of the morning!

Gently balanced upon the wings
Of the intelligent whirlwind,
In a similar ecstasy,

My sister, floating side by side,
We’ll flee without ever stopping
To the paradise of my dreams!

[Charles Baudelaire, Le Vin des amants]

Concluding his back-cover essay on the Goldberg Variations, Glenn Gould wrote:
“It is, in short, music which observes neither end nor beginning, music with neither real climax nor real resolution, music which, like Baudelaire’s lovers, ‘rests lightly on the wings of the unchecked wind.’ It has, then, unity through intuitive perception, unity born of craft and scrutiny, mellowed by mastery achieved, and revealed to us here, as so rarely in art, in the vision of subconscious design exulting upon a pinnacle of potency.”
